General info :
Gérard Uféras (born May 3, 1954 in Paris, France) is a French photographer.

At the age of thirteen, Gérard Uféras was introduced to art with two friends. Together they systematically visited all the Parisian museums. His father ran a household appliance store and collected cameras, which Gérard Uféras used from the age of eight. Discovering the works of Henri Cartier-Bresson, André Kertesz, and Willy Ronis, who would later become his friend, led him to see photography as a means of exploring the world and artistic expression.

In 1984, he met Christian Caujolle and began a regular collaboration with the newspaper Libération, for which he produced numerous reports and portraits and which organized his first exhibition at the La Chambre Claire bookstore. He participated in the creation of the VU agency in 1986 and regularly publishes in the French and international press.

Passionate about music and theater, winner of the Villa Medicis Hors les Murs prize, he began a long journey across Europe in 1988, behind the scenes at opera houses. He began his work in Paris and completed it in Moscow in 2001, which was published in the book Un fantôme à l'Opéra (A Phantom at the Opera) by Editions du Collectionneur. He joined the Rapho agency in 1993. This was followed by a series of major projects: the world of fashion, shot throughout Europe and in New York (The Stuff of Dreams), the Isle of Thanet in the south of England at the request of the Cross Channel Photographic Mission (The Visit), the Cannes Film Festival, Giorgio Strehler 's Piccolo Teatro in Milan, and more. In 2005, he spent a whole year with the Paris Opera Ballet (Un pas vers les Etoiles). In 2008 he began his project Paris d'amour, a portrait of the population of Paris and its diversity on the theme of love and marriage, which was exhibited at the Paris City Hall in 2010.

His work has received several awards and is part of the collections of the Maison européenne de la photographie in Paris, the Fonds national d'art contemporain, the Union centrale des arts décoratifs, the Bibliothèque nationale de France, the National Gallery in London, the Musée de l'Élysée in Lausanne, the Salzburg Festival in Austria, the Henkel collection in Germany, the Maison de la photographie in Moscow, a.o.
