Playboy is an American men's lifestyle and entertainment magazine. It was founded in Chicago in 1953 by Hugh Hefner.
The French version of Playboy appeared in November 1973 under the aegis of Daniel Filipacchi (who had created Lui ten years earlier) while the American edition sold around 60,000 copies in France. During the first years, the magazine managed to attract some leading French actresses on its cover: Brigitte Fossey (1976), Jane Birkin (1976 and 1982), Nicole Calfan (1978), Marie-France Pisier (1979), Romy Schneider ( 1980), Anne Parillaud (1981), Dominique Laffin (1982).

In 1985, the magazine changed publishers and restarted its numbering. A slogan appears on the cover, "Tous les plaisirs de l'homme" (“All the pleasures of man”), above French actresses (Nathalie Baye, Zabou Breitman and Arielle Dombasle) and a few singers (Elli Medeiros and Caroline Loeb). The end of the 1980s was also marked by the Coco-girls parade.

In 1989, only a few issues appeared with the designation “Special Edition”.

The turn of the 1990s was particularly marked by a fall in sales.

A new series began in 1991 (Chicago Éditions). New slogan at the end of the 1990s: "le magazine aux longues oreilles" (“the magazine with long ears”). The covers are more similar to the American edition of the same period: Sharon Stone, Pamela Anderson, Anna Nicole Smith, Shannen Doherty.
From 1995 onwards, a few French celebrities appeared from time to time: Draghixa, Ophélie Winter, Lio, Béatrice Dalle and Julie Pietri.

Since April 2000, a new series of the French edition of Playboy has been published by Groupe 1633 (which also publishes the magazines Rolling Stone, FHM and Newlook).

From 2009, its frequency is bimonthly and its issues are thematic. The French edition of Playboy was suspended in January 2011.

In December 2016, a new edition hit the newsstands. The magazine is now quarterly and without full-frontal nudity.
