General info : | | Balenciaga is the brand name of Balenciaga SA, a Spanish luxury fashion house founded in 1919 by the designer Cristóbal Balenciaga in San Sebastián, Spain and currently based in Paris.
Balenciaga had a reputation as a couturier of uncompromising standards and was referred to as "the master of us all" by Christian Dior. His bubble skirts and odd, feminine, yet "modernistic" silhouettes became the trademarks of the house.
Cristóbal Balenciaga closed his fashion house in 1968 and died in 1972. The house lay dormant until 1986 when it was reopened under new ownership.
In 1986, Jacques Bogart SA acquired the rights to Balenciaga.
In July 2001, the Gucci Group acquired a 91 percent stake in Balenciaga.
The brand is now owned by the luxury group Kering. | |
