Fortrel was the brand name of a polyester fiber made by Celanese Fiber Company, a division of Celanese Corporation Of America.
In the 1960s Celanese and Fortrel were trademarks of Fiber Industries, Inc.,the company formed jointly by Celanese and Imperial Chemical Industries.

The Fortrel trademark was filed February 4, 1960 by Fiber Industries, Inc.

In 1989 Wellman, Inc. acquired Fiber Industries, Inc. from Hoechst Celanese Corp.
Fiber Industries, Inc. was a leading manufacturer of premium polyester textile fibers sold under the brand name, Fortrel. The company became part of Wellman’s Fibers Division, doubling Wellman’s asset and revenue base, and positioning the company as a leading producer of polyester fiber.

In 2006, Wellman closed its fiber and bottling recycling divisions at the Johnsonville site. Wellman Plastics Recycling, LLC was formed in 2008 following the bankruptcy and eventual dissolution of Wellman, Inc.
